A serial killer is on the loose in Hanbury and Underwood is in the unenviable position of knowing that it is his own past detective adventures that have provoked the killing spree. Someone is out to revenge themselves on him by killing those who mean something to him. To add to his burden, his wife Verity is suffering a difficult pregnancy and is confined to bed for the duration. His brother Gil is risking his career by falling in love with a Roman Catholic and his old tutor has inflicted himself on the family for a long visit. As if he didn’t have enough to contend with a vivacious young woman called Lady Cara Lovell, daughter of an Earl, has decided to pass the time by indulging in a flirtation with Underwood; he is totally clueless but the rest of Hanbury is scandalised. When they are both abducted and held prisoner in the limestone caves above the town, it is assumed they have eloped leaving poor Verity about to give birth and unaware that she has been abandoned. Facing his most difficult challenge yet, Underwood has to save Lady Cara, bring the murderer to justice and get back to his wife before she hears the rumours of his infidelity, but only a fool would wander the labyrinthine caves without a guide. Will Underwood survive to see his first child born safely?
Behind the Horseman The Underwood Mysteries Volume 3 Mrs Suzanne Downes Books
This is more a review of the series than an individual book. Sorry. Although I have to agree with many of the criticisms of this work already mentioned by other reviewers, I found that the characters were somehow likeable and I was rooting for them to resolve their problems and succeed. With each book I became more drawn to them in spite of my irritation. I did find the author's prejudice against hunting--in each book she mentions that someone would make a good murderer because they are avid hunter's, which is ridiculous--off putting. Her lack of understanding of horses and horsemanship is also irritating, but that would only be noticed by an avid horse person. Frankly, the high class woman, as a heavy handed rider who subdues half-trained stallions by sheer high temper has been over done in countless romance novels, and it never was accurate. So, why did I give this book four stars? As I stated above, in spite of their irritating personalities I found myself liking the admirable qualities in the characters and hoping for a good resolution. That drew me on to read the three books so far in this series, and if there is another to follow I will give it a try.Product details

Behind the Horseman The Underwood Mysteries Volume 3 Mrs Suzanne Downes Books Reviews
Ok mystery but some of the language is very old fashioned so some people may find it a little difficult.
As a huge fan of historical fiction I can honestly say this book is a winner. I loved all the characters especially Underwood and Verity. Since I did not read earlier volumes I had no idea what to expect but I fell right into this book and immediately took to Underwood. Great story, great mystery. Just bought volume 4!
Suzanne Downes is an excellent writer. The story is fascinating. I would suggest reading all 4 of her "Underwood" books.
Susanna Downs has a great knack for completing all story lines. I only wish that her books were longer and more in-depth. My only disappointment was that the version has a LOT of errors.
The Underwoods have rid the world of more bad guys and found greater purpose in their lives! Verity has finally had her baby, a little girl, while her husband has solved a baffling series of murders. His brother has loved and lost, only to find love again! Enjoy yet another engaging tale!
This is the 3rd novel in the Underwood series that I have read, and each story has only become better than the last.
The Hero is an odd man of learning, having been an instructor at Cambridge for 20 years. He is at times, obtuse to the emotional clues from others, except when solving a mystery.
The Heroine is a wonderfully warm and long suffering woman, who finally realizes that she can't expect her husband to like every other male. He is slow to appreciate her, until he almost loses her. It is almost too late when he realizes he's in love with her.
Being a Romance Novel, all's well that ends well.
I have all of the reviews and as always they vary greatly. I think this is great, if we all thought the same the world would be very boring indeed.
I really enjoyed the three books I have so far read in this series. I have read the diparaging reviews and I have a number of reasons to disagree, but I will not single out any that I like or dislike. I thought the characters were well developed and in particular the lead characters develop over several books, and it's a shame to miss this unravel. Indeed the creative dialoge is also developed in the same manner. Suzanne Downes described all things very well and it was easy to visualise her love of the surrounding countyside. You won't be sorry starting this mystery series it is great.
I am happy to recommend the three books to date in this series and look forward to starting book 4. I have also learned from Ms Downes Facebook page that book five (Yield not to misfortune) has been completed and is now being edited.
